Most couples can become pregnant without the expense and time-commitment required to do in vitro fertilization or other similar advanced treatments. Some couples begin basic fertility treatment with a obstetrician/gynecologist (ob/gyn) rather than a reproductive endocrinologist. But there are many couples who want to work with a fertility specialist from the start, particularly those in which the female partner is over 35. If an infertile couple decides to use a general gynecologist (or is required to do so by their insurance) for their initial treatment, they should make sure that basic treatments have a reasonable chance of success for them. Under almost all circumstances, they should attempt no more than six months of treatments with a general gynecologist.
